Digipak Analysis (Niki & The Dove - Instinct)

I decided to analyse Niki & The Dove's album 'Instinct', this album has various aspects that are commonly seen within album covers that are created to fit the indietronica genre. The cover features a male and female standing in opposing positions, the man is seen to be standing in a pose that creates an idea of strength and stability. He's looking away from the camera to create an idea of mystery which is commonly seen in the majority of digipaks created within the indietronica genre. Whereas the female is standing in a pose to create an idea of freedom, the costume choices show an idea of individuality and this pose used by the female could influence an idea of not caring. The use of bright contrasting colours shows the bold stand out aspect seen in the indietronica genre, it makes the audience know that this music is loud and tends to be seen as music that would be used within a club. The large moon is placed within central composition, this again adds to the mysterious side of the indietronica genre, how each song will be different almost, the album is a surprise. It also influences the idea that this particular genre of music is known for it's popularity within nightlife. The use of exotic tree silhouettes seen at either side of the album cover shows an exotic side towards the music, possibly influencing ideas of the summer or partying whilst on holiday. The album cover is created to almost seem like a piece of art as opposed to an ordinary album cover. The majority of artists within the indietronica genre always create album covers to appear to be a piece of art, hiding a hidden image almost. It creates an idea to the audience that the cover is a piece of art but so is the music that is featured within the album. Furthermore the female on the cover isn't overly sexualised, it creates an idea of a strong female character as opposed to using the body image to sell the album as most would do. The album cover shows an idea of a night sky, the use of the moon and the foreground replicates an idea of stars creating the idea of astrology being specifically featured on the album cover. The use of astrology creates an idea of the album cover trying to attract the target audience as the majority that listen to indietronica seem to enjoy astrology and galaxies these were a major trend on the social networking site 'Tumblr' which the majority of the target audiences that listen to indietronica tend to use on a daily basis. This could be a reason why the use of night time and astrology was used within the album cover, in order to attract the target audiences. The bands logo is situated at the top of the album cover in a central composition placed on top of the moon, this influences the artists well known name and logo. The logo is black which makes the logo stand out more on top of the moon, this means fans will notice the logo almost instantly. It shows the bold identity that the band are trying to create whilst also influencing the idea of the simplistic logos trend that is shown within the indietronica genre on a regular basis.

The back cover of the album is rather simplistic, it carries on the original concept seen on the album cover of night time however it does not feature the large moon. The use of silhouetted trees is still seen on the back cover, adding to the natural exotic mystery that is shown on the album cover. The track list is done in a simplistic black font but is placed within central composition in order to stand out ever so slightly. It draws the attention to the track list instead of audiences being distracted by the art work featured on the back cover.

The disc is again very simplistic, it features a smaller design of the top section of the album cover within the middle section of the disc. The rest of the disc is white, creating a contrast between the middle section of the disc and the outer section. This makes the disc seem rather simplistic, whilst also creating the idea of the disc being a piece of art work due to featuring the album cover within the middle section.
